Remontowa Shipbuilding has been awarded a contract to build seven modern electrically powered ferries (4 x 187 kW azimuth thrusters) for the Scottish shipowner Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited (CMAL). The ferries will have a battery capacity of 5746 kWh.
This is the largest order for a series of passenger vessels in the yard’s history, both in terms of number of units and total contract value.
The first of the electric ferries will be delivered as early as the third quarter of 2027, while the entire order will be completed in the first quarter of 2029. The units ordered will operate up to nine strategic ferry services on the west coast of Scotland in the scenic Clyde & Hebrides region.
Six of the ferries will be able to carry 150 passengers and 24 cars at a time, while the seventh unit will be able to carry up to 250 passengers and 16 cars.
The completion of this project demonstrates the highest quality standards offered by Remontowa Shipbuilding, beating off competition from renowned shipyards in the Netherlands, Turkey and the UK.
Significantly, CMAL is a returning customer, having previously placed its trust in the Polish shipyard – between 2005 and 2011, Remontowa Shipbuilding supplied the owner with three car ferries operating between Glasgow and the Western Isles.
