ORLEN has discovered a new oil deposit in the Lubuskie region with recoverable reserves estimated at over 100 000 tonnes. In the immediate vicinity of this discovery, the company has identified additional geological structures that may contain even larger quantities of crude oil. The total resource for the entire complex could exceed 500 000 tonnes.

The discovery was made as a result of the Rzeczyca-1 exploration well drilled in Grodziszcze under licence No. 24/95/Ł. Once in production, the well is expected to produce approximately 16,500 tonnes of oil per year.

Ireneusz Fąfara, CEO of ORLEN, said:

The Rzeczyca field is one of the largest oil discoveries in Poland in recent years. It is a great achievement for our geologists and engineers. The start of production from this resource will benefit not only ORLEN, but also local government units, which will receive up to 90% of the royalties from oil and gas production. This means that, taking into account the planned production, the additional revenue for the municipal budget may amount to up to one million zlotys per year”.

“The reservoir tests carried out on the Rzeczyca-1 well have not only confirmed the existence of oil reserves and the possibility of their commercial exploitation, but also indicate the presence of additional large quantities of oil in nearby geological structures. It is therefore highly likely that further significant discoveries can be expected here. This confirms the validity of the new exploration approach we have adopted in the area”, added Wiesław Prugar, ORLEN Board Member for Upstream.

Drilling of the Rzeczyca-1 well started in June this year and took 63 days. Exalo Drilling, an ORLEN Group company, was responsible for drilling the well. The well reached a depth of 2,750 metres.
ORLEN plans to transport the oil produced by the Rzeczyca-1 well by pipeline to the nearby Radoszyn oil and gas mine.

Currently, the majority of domestic oil production comes from western Poland, especially from the Lubuskie region, where the largest fields such as Lubiatów, Międzychód, Grotów and Barnówko-Mostno-Buszewo are located. Last year, the ORLEN Group produced approximately 824,000 tonnes of oil, condensate and NGLs in Poland.
