The collaboration between SAP and Fundação Amazônia Sustentável exemplifies the application of analytical technologies to real social and environmental challenges in the Amazon. Since 2008, the foundation has been working to promote the rights and development of local communities. It has partnered with SAP to implement a knowledge management system that enables precise monitoring of the support provided to 21,000 families in the region.

Enterprise-class tools have been instrumental in this process: These include SAP Datasphere, which integrates disparate databases into a unified analytical structure; SAP Analytics Cloud, which facilitates forecasting and intelligent activity planning; and SAP Sustainability Control Tower, which provides metrics aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals framework and enables the empirical measurement of the impact of FAS activities. This has not only improved the efficiency and transparency of resource allocation, but also fundamentally changed the way the effectiveness of individual programmes is assessed. Previously fragmented and difficult to scale, knowledge has become measurable and accessible in real time.

As Michelle Costa, FAS’s Senior Planning Management Officer, points out, modern technologies have enabled the organisation to gain a more complete picture of its initiatives. This has resulted in greater transparency with partners and donors, and has strengthened the foundation’s ability to support Amazonian communities.

SAP’s partnership with FAS since 2015 demonstrates how technology can support the sustainable development and protection of the Amazon by taking data analysis to a level previously unattainable for many non-governmental organisations. By integrating databases and cross-referencing temporal and territorial dimensions, FAS has gained the ability to conduct complex predictive analyses covering both resource allocation and the measurement of the social and environmental impact of individual projects.

Today, SAP solutions enable the foundation to generate highly granular financial reports and build dynamic dashboards that monitor the effectiveness of local production chains, from açaí and guarana production to tourism. The Bauana community is a prime example of this, as SAP’s support has enabled the development of a vegetable oil production company, benefiting over 300 families.

As Piotr Ferszka, CEO of SAP Poland, emphasises, ‘At SAP, we believe that technology has a fundamental role to play in solving the biggest global challenges. Sustainable development is not only a goal, but also an imperative that should be embedded in the DNA of every modern organisation.”

Thanks to the combination of engineering expertise, analytical tools, and mentoring for local entrepreneurs, FAS can now track the socio-economic evolution of its beneficiaries and make investment decisions based on accurate data, resulting in tangible, measurable change in the region.
