BYD, Chinese automotive manufacturer, has achieved a significant milestone in Europe with the commencement of construction on its first passenger car factory on the Old Continent. Situated in Szeged, Hungary, this strategic investment is poised to reinforce BYD’s market presence in Europe.

A key component of the new facility will be state-of-the-art paint lines. The company has chosen Germany’s Dürr, a leading supplier of advanced coating solutions, as its partner for this crucial element. Over the next few months, the German company will deliver more than 120 advanced robots to streamline the vehicle painting process.

Dr Lars Friedrich, CEO of Automotive at Dürr, said:

‘As the global market leader in automotive painting, Dürr is the right partner to deliver projects of this size successfully and on schedule. It was not only our unique technology that convinced BYD, but also our experience in Hungary, where we have already completed many projects.’

This is the first order Dürr has received from BYD in the passenger car segment. This follows a rigorous audit by the Chinese giant, which confirmed the superior quality and innovation of Dürr’s solutions. The new factory will be equipped with state-of-the-art paint robots from the EcoRP series, which will be used to precisely paint both the interior and exterior surfaces of vehicles. Six-axis robots will be used to paint the bodywork, while additional equipment will handle the opening of doors, lids and hatches, streamlining the entire process.

Thanks to the cooperation with Dürr, BYD will also be able to offer its customers unique personalisation options, with the state-of-the-art EcoSupply P paint delivery system responsible for precise application of a wide range of colours. The innovative pigging technology will make the painting process more environmentally friendly.

The innovative use of specialised pistons to apply the paint eliminates the need for cleaning, thereby significantly reducing consumption of both paint and rinsing agents. This new Chinese investment in Hungary represents a significant step towards the expansion of the Chinese brand into the European market and signals a new era in passenger car manufacturing.
