On 5 February 2025, the two parties signed a framework agreement for KNDS to acquire the infrastructure of the Görlitz railway plant.

The Görlitz plant is currently involved in the production of double-decker trains and various tram projects. Depending on the project status, these orders will either be completed in Görlitz or transferred to other locations.

Tim Dawidowsky, President Central & Northern Europe at Alstom, emphasised the importance of this transition: “We are pleased to have found a sustainable and beneficial solution for the site and its employees. The high level of expertise and qualification of the metalworking workforce was a decisive factor in KNDS’ decision to take over. The team in Görlitz has demonstrated exceptional quality in their work and the majority of them will have a secure future with KNDS. Our aim is to create the best possible career prospects for the employees.

Florian Hohenwarter, COO of KNDS, highlighted the strategic importance of the acquisition: “With the addition of Görlitz to the KNDS production network, we are expanding our capabilities with a highly specialised facility. This site gives us access to exceptionally well-trained specialists to produce high quality assemblies for our vehicles. We look forward to integrating this new team and shaping the future of our operations together.

The acquisition by KNDS provides long-term stability for the site and its workforce. It has been agreed that 350 to 400 of the approximately 700 employees will be retained by KNDS. In addition, the company will explore the possibility of offering up to 75 more employees career opportunities at other KNDS sites. In addition, 100 employees will be offered jobs at other Alstom sites, ensuring that approximately 580 of the 700 employees will continue to work within Alstom or KNDS. For those not covered by these agreements, Alstom is committed to providing fair and socially responsible solutions.

KNDS plans to use the Görlitz plant for the production of assemblies for the LEOPARD 2 main battle tank, the PUMA infantry fighting vehicle and various modules for the BOXER wheeled armoured vehicle. The transition of the site will take place in stages and is expected to be completed by 2027. The first transfer of personnel and the start of production are scheduled to begin later this year.
