TotalEnergies and Air Products have signed a 15-year agreement for the annual supply of 70,000 tonnes of green hydrogen in Europe. Deliveries will start in 2030. This is the first multi-year agreement of its kind. TotalEnergies aims to secure a total of 500,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year to decarbonise its refineries in Europe.

The agreement covers the supply of green hydrogen from Air Products’ global network to TotalEnergies’ refineries in Northern Europe. This is expected to reduce annual CO2 emissions by approximately 700,000 tonnes. The agreement between the parties is the first step towards TotalEnergies’ goal of a 40% net reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from its oil and gas operations (scope 1 and 2) by 2030 compared to 2015 levels.

Patrick Pouyanné, President and CEO of TotalEnergies, commented: “The agreement with Air Products is the first to be signed following the tender announcement last year. It is a step towards achieving our goal of decarbonising processes using hydrogen in TotalEnergies’ refineries in Northern Europe by the end of this decade. We are proud to be working with Air Products, a pioneer in low-emission hydrogen production. Our joint efforts are further evidence of our commitment to leading the energy transition. Signing long-term contracts to supply green hydrogen to our six refineries and two biorefineries in Europe will help build a green industry. We are also pleased to extend our cooperation with Air Products to include the supply of green energy, which will support Air Products’ internal decarbonisation plans”.

“One of the world’s largest energy companies has committed to using renewable hydrogen to decarbonise its refineries in Northern Europe, and we are proud to supply green hydrogen to TotalEnergies,” said Seifi Ghasemi, Chairman, President and CEO of Air Products. “We have been supplying clean hydrogen for seven years and have always believed that there would be strong demand if we could supply it on an industrial scale – our agreement with TotalEnergies confirms this. It is clear that the demand for green hydrogen is not only there, it is growing rapidly and will make a significant contribution to the decarbonisation of heavy industry and other sectors. I admire TotalEnergies’ vision and courage to build a cleaner future for the world,” added Seifi Ghasemi.

In addition to the green hydrogen supply agreement, the two companies have signed a renewable energy supply memorandum, which includes the first power purchase agreement (PPA) for 150 MW from a solar farm in Texas. The parties also plan to jointly explore further PPA potential in Poland, France and the UK.
