The company has invested more than €25 million in the development of production lines and machinery in Kielce, Bełchatów and Sosnowiec. This investment is part of DS Smith’s growth strategy in Central and Eastern Europe, which aims to strengthen its position as a leading provider of sustainable packaging solutions to customers across the region.
Of the total amount, up to €22 million has been allocated to the expansion of the Kielce plant, equipping it with state-of-the-art machinery. This investment includes the installation of a new Bobst Masterline 2.1 die-cutter for €6.1 million, which will increase the automation and precision of production in the flexo department.
In addition, a new DS Smith Easy Bowl fresh food packaging line was commissioned at the Bełchatów plant, while the Sosnowiec plant invested in a fibre paper bag production line for the e-commerce sector.
“We are continuing a series of investments in Poland to strengthen our market position in the region. By investing in increasing our production capacity, we are able to offer our customers, including leading FMCG brands, major retailers, e-commerce players and industrial companies, a greater number of packaging solutions that are recyclable and fit into a closed-loop economy. In doing so, we are helping our customers achieve their sustainability goals and meet their environmental expectations. DS Smith recently reached a milestone in its sustainability strategy ‘For Now. For the Future’ strategy. Working with our customers, we have succeeded in replacing more than one billion pieces of problematic plastic before the 2025 deadline,” says Reinier Schlatmann, President of DS Smith’s Eastern Europe region.
The production of DS Smith Easy Bowl trays can reduce plastic consumption by up to 85% compared to traditional plastic trays, and the modern machinery will enable the production line to increase efficiency and productivity by around 24 million units per year.
The new machinery at the Kielce plant is dedicated to the production of laminated solid board packaging for industrial and FMCG customers. It has been designed to meet the demands of complex projects, providing the highest quality printing and finishing processes, tailored to the individual requirements of each packaging solution.
“We are delighted with the new investment, which will increase our machinery and production capacity. This will enable our team to develop and deliver even more innovative packaging designs, while improving quality control to minimise waste. The advanced technologies, combined with our design approach and Circular Design Metrics, will help the company meet its sustainability requirements and strengthen DS Smith’s position as a leading provider of sustainable packaging solutions in the region,” said Katarzyna Kala-Kowalska, CEO of DS Smith Poland.
With the investments made, the packaging manufacturer expects to increase its annual production capacity in Poland by around 25 million square metres, including an additional 7.5 million square metres for the production of glued boxes.
