DHL Express will invest more than 40 million euros in the construction of a new European aircraft maintenance facility in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain.

The facility is expected to be operational by mid-2027 and will be DHL Express’ second largest service centre in Europe after Leipzig, Germany.

Jesús Sánchez, Senior Vice President Hubs & Gateways at DHL Express Europe, said: “This is a key investment that will secure our service capabilities for the coming years, given the projected growth of our business. The new facility will not only relieve the pressure on the Leipzig repair centre, but will also create new jobs for local and skilled workers, in particular aircraft technicians”.

Initially, around 50 people will be employed to carry out maintenance work on DHL’s fleet of B757s and other company-owned aircraft. The investment will also include the construction of office space and storage areas for tools and key aircraft parts such as engines, APU systems, landing gear and thrust reversers.

The new service centre will be located to the west of the existing DHL Express facility at Vitoria Airport and will cover an area of more than 19,700 square metres. It will include a 6,600 square metre hangar, 1,605 square metres of outdoor space and an 11,500 square metre apron.

The new hangar will be carbon neutral. With this investment, DHL Express will also reduce the number of flights to other European maintenance facilities, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
