ABB will deliver 1,300 robots for the production of electric vehicles by Volvo Cars. The agreement includes comprehensive functional packages, covering various production tasks ranging from spot welding, through riveting and dosing, to flow drilling and ultrasonic weld inspection.

Each of these packages is ready for use, a customer-approved combination of hardware, software, and services. They will be implemented in facilities in Torslanda, Sweden, and Daqing, China.

“The historic transformation of the automotive industry, driven by growing consumer demand for electric vehicles and the desire to operate in a more sustainable manner, creates new opportunities and challenges for global manufacturers,” said Marc Segura, CEO of ABB Robotics. “The latest commitment from our partner Volvo Cars shows that together we are focused on delivering more sustainable production. With our new, energy-efficient family of large robots and OmniCoreTM controllers, we will help achieve energy savings of up to 20 percent in facilities worldwide.”

During the implementation, ABB will ensure continuous production, utilizing the software platform for planning and programming, RobotStudio®, for visualization and optimization of the implementation process before robot installation.
